An application has been filed with a Dhaka court seeking a case against former chief adviser of the interim government Dr Muhammad Yunus, former health adviser Nurjahan Begum, and two others over the alleged death of a nine-month-old girl from measles.
The application was submitted on Sunday to the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam by Sirajul Islam.
The court recorded the complainant’s statement and kept the matter pending for an order.
The complainant’s lawyer, Taslima Jahan Popy, confirmed the development.
According to the complaint, Sirajul Islam’s nine-month-old daughter, Sauda Muskan, developed a high fever in late February or early March at their home in Sadar upazila of Shariatpur. After local treatment failed, she was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the first week of March.
The complaint alleges that due to inadequate treatment for measles there, the child was transferred to the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Mohakhali on March 22.
It further alleges that on March 26, doctors and nurses asked the child’s mother to hold an oxygen cylinder and place the mask on the child. When she was unable to do so, a hospital cleaner was asked to assist. The child died about two hours later.
The complaint also alleges that delays in vaccine supply, the hospital authorities’ failure to ensure proper treatment, and the interim government’s alleged negligence in procuring and administering vaccines led to the deaths of more than 600 children across the country, including Sauda Muskan.
It claims that the accused cannot evade responsibility for those deaths.
