Five local government elections will be held across Bangladesh within the current fiscal year, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam said on Tuesday.
The government has allocated Tk 6,000 crore in the budget for the elections, he told reporters at the Secretariat after meeting Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh Christian Brix Møller.
Shahe Alam said a meeting with the Election Commission (EC) would be held next week to discuss preparations for the local government elections, subject to approval from the prime minister.
“The schedule and dates of the elections will be decided by the Election Commission,” he said.
The state minister said the ministry would hold a briefing on the local government elections after discussions with the EC.
The Danish ambassador met LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and State Minister Mir Shahe Alam at the Secretariat earlier in the day.
