The number of registered voters in Bangladesh has increased by more than 454,000 ahead of the upcoming local government elections, taking the total to 12,87,77,643.
Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed disclosed the figures at the Election Commission building in Agargaon on Monday while announcing the final updated voter list.
He said 454,403 new voters were added during the latest update.
“Using this voter list, we will move forward with the local government elections. Those who became voters by July 31 will be eligible to cast their ballots,” he said.
Of the total voters, 6,55,10,665 are men, 6,32,65,711 are women and 1,267 are transgender voters.
Akhtar Ahmed also said the tentative list of polling centres had already been finalised. The Election Commission will preserve and finalise the polling-centre list and publish it in the gazette 25 days before each tier of local government elections.
The upcoming local government elections will cover five tiers, including 13 city corporations, 330 municipalities, around 500 upazilas, 61 district councils and more than 4,500 union parishads.
According to the EC’s preliminary plan, the election process is expected to begin with union parishad elections.
