Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political future hangs in the balance as voters head to the polls on October 27 to decide whether he will remain in power or make way for a new leadership.

The election comes amid mounting criticism of Netanyahu over the security failures surrounding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, the subsequent wars in Gaza and with Iran, and Israel’s growing international isolation.

Netanyahu has highlighted his wartime leadership and close ties with US President Donald Trump as key strengths.

His opponents, however, have called for accountability over the October 7 security failures and criticised his government’s policies.

Former military chief Gadi Eisenkot leads a rival political alliance challenging Netanyahu’s Likud party and its right-wing allies.

Opinion polls indicate a closely contested race, with neither bloc assured of securing a parliamentary majority.

The outcome may depend on coalition negotiations and the support of smaller parties.

Netanyahu also faces corruption charges, which he denies.

The election is widely seen as a crucial test of his political future after years of dominating Israeli politics.

If no bloc secures a majority, coalition negotiations could prolong the uncertainty over who will lead the country.
