Grandfather, two grandchildren rown in Lakshmipur pond

A 70-year-old man and his two grandchildren drowned in a pond while bathing in Lakshmipur on Sunday.

The incident occurred at a pond in front of Ibrahim Patwari Bari in Shakchar area of Ward No. 6 under Shakchar Union in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila at around noon.

The deceased were identified as Abu Siddique, 70, his grandson Piyas, 8, and granddaughter Popi Akter, 6.

According to local residents, Abu Siddique had gone to the pond with his two grandchildren for a bath. He entered the water and went underwater but did not resurface for a long time.

His grandson and granddaughter then entered the pond in an attempt to find and rescue him. However, both children also drowned.

Local residents recovered the bodies of all three victims about an hour after the incident.

Abu Siddique was the son of Abdul Mannan Patwari of Ibrahim Patwari Bari in Shakchar Union. Piyas was the son of his son, Abdul Aziz, while Popi was the daughter of his daughter, Sumi Akter.

Mehedi Hasan Faruk, a member of Ward No. 1 of Shakchar Union Parishad, said three members of the same family had died in the tragedy.

“The incident is extremely heartbreaking,” he said.

Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Wahid Parvez said police had been informed about the incident.

“It is a very tragic incident,” he said.
