Former president of Bangladesh Chhatra Union and central council member of the National People’s Action (NPA) Meghmallar Basu has been placed on life support after his condition deteriorated.

He was shifted to the medicine department’s intensive care unit (ICU) at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday afternoon after his health condition worsened. He was put on life support at around 7:30pm on Wednesday.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital Director Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman confirmed the development.

“His condition has been deteriorating since yesterday. That is why doctors initially shifted him to the ICU. He is still undergoing treatment under the supervision of the medical team,” he said.

Basu was rescued in an ailing condition from the gate area of Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital at around 12:30am on Tuesday. His acquaintances subsequently took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Hospital sources said his stomach was washed after doctors suspected poisoning.

He was initially admitted to Bed 3 of Room 602 at the hospital and treated there. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to the ICU on Tuesday and placed on life support on Wednesday evening.

Doctors are continuing efforts to stabilise his condition, hospital authorities said.
