A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered that former additional inspector general of police Iqbal Bahar, ex-Dhaka-5 lawmaker Harunur Rashid Munna and Jatrabari Thana Awami League President Kazi Monirul Islam Monu be shown arrested in a murder case filed over the killing of youth Emon Gazi during the July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order following two separate petitions submitted by police, confirmed State Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman.
Earlier, Sub-Inspector Emadul Karim of Jatrabari Police Station, also the investigating officer in the case, produced the accused before the court and sought permission to show them arrested in the case.
According to the petition, preliminary evidence gathered during the investigation suggests the involvement of Iqbal Bahar in the killing. He is currently in jail in connection with another murder case filed with the same police station.
The investigating officer said showing him arrested in this case was necessary to ensure a fair and impartial investigation.
In a separate petition, police sought to show Harunur Rashid Munna and Kazi Monirul Islam Monu arrested in the same case.
The petition states that Md Yasin Uddin, alias “Shooter Liton,” allegedly shot Emon Gazi dead under the direct instructions and instigation of Munna and Monu. Both are currently in jail in connection with separate murder cases.
According to the case statement, Emon Gazi was shot dead on August 5, 2024, on Chittagong Road in the capital’s Jatrabari area during the July Uprising.
Following the incident, the victim’s brother, Anwar Hossain, filed the murder case with Jatrabari Police Station on August 28, 2024.
