Three people were killed and at least 15 others injured when two passenger buses collided on the Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway in Shibchar of Madaripur on Friday afternoon.
The accident occurred around 3:30pm in the Bakherkandi area of Shibchar, according to fire service officials and witnesses.
A Palaki Paribahan bus was travelling to Dhaka from Gopalganj when one of its wheels reportedly broke down on the expressway. The bus was parked on the road when a speeding Hanif Paribahan bus crashed into it from behind.
Three people died at the scene, while at least 15 others were injured.
Fire Service personnel from Bhanga in Faridpur rescued the injured and took them to a local clinic. One of the injured was reported to be in critical condition.
The accident disrupted traffic on the Dhaka-bound lane of the expressway. Shibchar Highway Police went to the scene and brought the situation under control around 5pm.
Abu Zafar Sardar, station officer of Bhanga Fire Service, confirmed the deaths and said the Palaki bus had been parked on the expressway after becoming disabled.
Shibchar Upazila Nirbahi Officer HM Ibne Mizan said highway police and fire service personnel were directed to conduct rescue operations following the accident.
Authorities were working to identify the victims, he added.
