State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir has said Bangladesh’s participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly was fruitful, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit providing an opportunity to present the new government’s commitments and expectations to the international community.
He made the remarks at a press briefing at the Foreign Ministry on Monday on the prime minister’s participation in the UNGA session.
“Considering everything, Bangladesh’s participation in this year’s General Assembly was fruitful,” Humayun said.
He said the visit highlighted the new government’s commitments and expectations globally while creating opportunities to expand bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
According to the state minister, participants in various meetings and bilateral engagements expressed support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition.
He said the prime minister took part in 30 official engagements during his four-day programme in New York, including eight UNGA-related events, four high-level side events and 11 bilateral meetings with different countries.
Humayun said Tarique held bilateral meetings with the presidents of Türkiye and Iran, the vice-president of the Maldives, and the prime ministers of Bhutan, Pakistan, Thailand, Croatia and Haiti, as well as the Crown Prince of Kuwait.
He also held meetings with the UN secretary-general, World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, the UN high commissioner for refugees, the UN high commissioner for human rights, the UN secretary-general’s special envoy on Myanmar and senior representatives of international organisations and business groups.
The state minister said the meetings covered issues of Bangladesh’s national interests, including trade and investment, manpower exports, energy security, regional cooperation, the Rohingya crisis, healthcare, climate change and international peace.
The press briefing was also attended by Foreign Ministry Secretary (Intergovernmental Organisations) M Farhadul Islam and Additional Foreign Secretary AKM Shahidul Karim.
