Bangladesh has expressed interest in the proposed Mecca Defence Pact, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir said on Monday.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“We are interested in the Mecca Defence Pact,” Kabir said.
He said Bangladesh was now being recognised as an important country and that stakeholders in the Middle East and the global Muslim world were inviting Bangladesh to participate in various initiatives under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
“Mecca has always held a special place in the hearts of the people of Bangladesh,” he said.
“If there is a security pact among Islamic nations in the Middle East, then it would not be unusual for Bangladesh to join it. Let’s see; it is being viewed positively,” Kabir said.
