Three friends were killed when a passenger bus ran over their motorcycle on the Dhaka-Barishal highway in Wazirpur upazila of Barishal on Monday evening.

The accident occurred around 6:30pm in the Atipara area of the highway, according to police and fire service officials.

The deceased were Tawhid and Sourav of Atipara village in Ward 6 of Bamrail Union and Mustakim of Dhamshar village in Ward 7. They were aged between 18 and 20 and had appeared in this year’s Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations.

Witnesses said a Dhaka-bound Suravi Paribahan bus hit the motorcycle carrying the three friends as they were travelling towards Barishal. The three riders were thrown from the motorcycle and died on the spot.

The bus stopped about one kilometre north of the accident site, while the driver and his assistant fled the scene.

The accident caused several kilometres of traffic congestion on both sides of the highway. Police from Wazirpur Model Police Station and the Gournadi Highway Police Station, along with firefighters, later cleared the road and restored normal traffic.

Wazirpur Fire Service Station Officer Abdur Rashid said all three victims died at the scene. Their bodies were recovered and handed over to police of the Gournadi Highway Police Station.

Wazirpur Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Faruk Hossain said the three friends had gone out for a ride on the motorcycle when the bus hit them in the Atipara area.
