President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for increased research and innovation in artificial intelligence (AI), nanotechnology, biotechnology and semiconductors to advance public welfare.
He made the call on Tuesday when a delegation from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Masud, paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban, President’s Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam told BSS.
The president also stressed the need for responsible and moderate use of AI, warning against its uncontrolled application.
“Uncontrolled use of AI is reducing people’s thinking capacity and creativity. Therefore, it is essential to ensure its use for public welfare and in moderation,” he said.
During the meeting, the KUET vice-chancellor briefed the president on the university’s academic activities.
The president called for further decentralisation of higher education, saying advanced educational opportunities should not remain concentrated in the capital.
He also stressed greater involvement of universities in national research and development activities.
Prof Masud invited the president, in his capacity as chancellor, to attend KUET’s upcoming convocation. The president accepted the invitation and assured the delegation that he would attend.
The president’s military secretary, secretary and press secretary, along with KUET professors, were present at the meeting.
