Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) Vice-Chancellor Prof Sheikh Shariful Alam and several others have remained confined inside the VC’s residence since Monday noon, with two alumni falling ill after spending the night there.

One of them, engineer Shahriar, was taken to Evercare Hospital in Chattogram for advanced treatment after receiving initial medical care at the university’s medical centre.

At around 1am on Tuesday, the VC contacted a doctor by phone and requested medical assistance for those inside the residence. Following discussions with protesting students, CUET Medical Centre’s duty doctor Md Abdullah and technologist Basu Dev entered the building and examined the sick individuals. Representatives of several media outlets were also allowed inside.

The doctor found Shahriar’s blood pressure at 170/100 mmHg. On medical advice, he was taken to the university medical centre for initial treatment before being referred to Evercare Hospital.

Another alumnus, engineer Titu Md Sohel, was found to have blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg. Others staying inside the residence were also given saline on medical advice.

“We have two former students suffering from complications related to high blood pressure, so I called for an ambulance and a doctor,” the VC said. “As everyone has been confined here for a long time, they are feeling unwell and exhausted.”

Prof Sheikh Shariful Alam entered the campus on Monday morning after breaking the lock on the VC’s residence. At around noon, protesting students gave him an ultimatum to leave the building. When he failed to do so within the stipulated time, they confined him inside.

The protesters have also issued an ultimatum demanding his resignation. They vowed to keep him confined until he steps down and former VC Prof Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem is reinstated.

The students announced their position at a press conference in front of Administrative Building-2 at around 6pm on Monday.
