The Appellate Division will hear appeals on December 8 against a High Court verdict in the widely discussed murder case of tailor shop worker Biswajit Das, in which the death sentences of two convicts were upheld.

Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal confirmed the matter on Monday. Chamber Judge Md Rezaul Haque fixed the date.

On December 18, 2013, a Dhaka court sentenced eight people to death and 13 others to life imprisonment for the murder. The verdict was delivered by Dhaka Fourth Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge ABM Nizamul Haque.

In its full verdict published on October 31, 2017, the High Court upheld the death sentences of two convicts, commuted the death sentences of four others to life imprisonment and acquitted the remaining two.

Of the 13 people initially sentenced to life imprisonment, two were later acquitted on appeal, while the sentences of the remaining 11 were upheld.

Biswajit, who ran a tailoring shop in Old Dhaka’s Shankharibazar, was hacked to death in front of Victoria Park on December 9, 2012, during an opposition-sponsored blockade. Members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the then ruling Awami League, were accused of carrying out the attack.

On March 5, 2013, the Detective Branch of police filed a charge sheet against 21 Chhatra League activists in connection with the murder.
