A 24-year-old Bangladeshi man has reportedly been killed while fighting for the Russian army in the Russia-Ukraine war after being lured by the promise of Tk30 lakh for joining the military.

Mohammad Sagar, son of Kabir Hossain from Chhaykot area of Chandina municipality in Cumilla, joined the Russian military in May this year. His family had lost contact with him since then.

Sagar’s family learned of his death on Saturday (October 17) through a colleague, his father confirmed on Monday (October 19).

Kabir Hossain said Sagar was the youngest of his five children and had earned his living transporting goods by van for a rod and cement shop in Chandina.

In mid-2025, Sagar insisted on going to Russia and eventually travelled there at a cost of around Tk6 lakh. He initially took a job at a bakery but was later allegedly approached by a broker who promised him Tk30 lakh to join the Russian army, his father said.

Kabir said he had urged his son not to join the military, but Sagar did not listen. After joining the war in May, he stopped communicating with his family.

The family has yet to receive details about when Sagar died or whether his body will be brought back to Bangladesh.

Chandina Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ashraful Haque said he had learned of the incident through journalists and would contact the family to gather further information.
