Health Minister Sardar Sakhawat Husain on Saturday (October 24) ordered the transfer of a nurse over alleged negligence of duty and a one-day salary deduction for four doctors who were absent without permission during a surprise visit to Fulbaria Upazila Health Complex in Mymensingh.
Speaking to journalists after the inspection, the minister said the government was working to bring the country’s healthcare system up to a standard that meets public expectations, following the directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
He said the government had taken initiatives to address longstanding problems in the health sector, including improving hospital cleanliness, increasing medicine supplies and ensuring adequate stocks of saline.
The minister expressed hope that visible improvements in the health sector would be achieved within the next few months.
He also said the government planned to invite tenders worth several thousand crore taka within the next 15 days for the development and reconstruction of healthcare infrastructure.
The funds would be used to improve healthcare facilities across the country, including upazila health complexes, he added.
The government is also taking steps to establish modern pathology laboratories at upazila-level hospitals to expand diagnostic services in rural areas, the minister said.
