Bangladesh plans to showcase its traditional jute and jute-based products in Türkiye during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31) in Antalya from November 9 to 20.

The initiative aims to promote jute as an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic and highlight the commercial potential of Bangladesh’s jute industry in international markets.

Preparations are underway to feature jute products as part of Bangladesh’s participation in COP31. A special display of jute products for the exhibition in Türkiye has been set up at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The planned display at Bangladesh’s pavilion will feature a range of jute-based products, related technologies and their commercial prospects. Items such as bags, home décor products and handicrafts are expected to be presented to international buyers, investors and policymakers.

Officials and industry stakeholders believe growing global awareness of environmental pollution and the need for alternatives to plastic could create new opportunities for expanding international markets for jute products.

As a natural, renewable and biodegradable fibre, jute has significant potential to support environmentally sustainable production and consumption.

At a meeting on COP31 preparations with climate experts and relevant stakeholders at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 15, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam highlighted the potential of Bangladesh’s jute industry. The meeting emphasised promoting jute as an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic.

If implemented, the initiative could help diversify the uses of Bangladeshi jute, explore new export markets and strengthen commercial links with overseas buyers, while raising the international profile of the country’s traditional “golden fibre” sector.
