Prime Minister Tarique Rahman presides over a meeting on Dhaka’s waste-to-energy projects at the Cabinet Division conference room in the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday reviewed the progress of two major waste-to-energy projects aimed at converting municipal waste into electricity in Dhaka and directed the authorities to expedite their implementation.

The meeting, held at the Cabinet Division conference room at the Bangladesh Secretariat, focused on separate projects to be developed at Aminbazar under the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Matuail under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

Officials at the meeting said China’s CMEC Group will invest in constructing a waste-to-energy power plant at Aminbazar. The facility is expected to process around 3,000 tonnes of municipal waste daily and generate 42.5 megawatts of electricity.

The project is scheduled to begin supplying electricity to the national grid by August 2028 and is expected to remain operational for at least 25 years.

The meeting was also informed that South Korea’s B&F Company will implement an integrated waste management and power generation project at Matuail.

Under the project, approximately 15,000 tonnes of methane gas will be produced annually from municipal waste, generating around 81,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity each year, equivalent to about 221 MW per day.

Besides electricity generation, the Matuail project will also produce solar power, organic fertiliser, animal feed and environmentally friendly eco-bricks. It is expected to process between 3,000 and 3,500 tonnes of waste every day, contributing to improved waste management, climate change mitigation and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

To ensure the timely implementation of both projects, the Prime Minister directed the Local Government Division, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, and the Ministry of Environment to hold an inter-ministerial meeting and coordinate closely.

Tarique Rahman stressed the importance of completing both projects within the stipulated timeframe and ensuring the best use of environmentally sustainable technologies.

The meeting was attended by Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, State Minister Mir Shah Alam, DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan, DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar, Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon, and other senior government officials.
