Train services on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar railway route resumed on Sunday afternoon after remaining snapped for five consecutive days due to heavy rainfall that submerged sections of the railway line.
At around 1:30 p.m., the Parjatak Express, arriving from Dhaka, departed Chattogram Railway Station for Cox’s Bazar, marking the restoration of services on the route. The train had been stranded in the Sholoshahar area of Chattogram last Tuesday after floodwaters inundated the tracks. Its journey was officially cancelled later that night.
As rainfall gradually eased and floodwaters receded from the railway line, authorities began preparing to restart operations. Railway officials carried out multiple inspections to assess track conditions and ensure passenger safety before approving the resumption of train services.
Prior to the restart, Mohammad Subaktagin, Chief Engineer and General Manager of Bangladesh Railway’s Eastern Zone, inspected the affected section at Sholoshahar Station alongside senior railway officials.
Speaking to reporters, Subaktagin said Chattogram had experienced several days of intense rainfall, with this year’s downpour reaching record levels. Floodwaters rose to nearly two feet above the railway tracks in the Sholoshahar area, forcing the suspension of train operations.
He added that after the water receded, railway workers raised the low-lying section of the track by approximately one foot using crushed stone. Following the successful completion of repair and safety work, authorities decided to resume train operations on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar route.
