Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday announced that 7,000 families in every upazila across the country will receive Family Cards, with the cards to be issued to female members of eligible households.

Speaking at an interaction with Family Card beneficiaries in Gournadi, Barishal, he said the government had begun distributing the cards in line with the BNP’s election pledge.

“Before the election, we promised that if the BNP formed the government, Family Cards would be provided to 40 million families across the country. We have now started distributing the cards in accordance with that commitment,” he said.

The prime minister said 4.1 million families would receive Family Cards during the current 2026-27 fiscal year, adding that funds had already been allocated for the programme in the national budget.

Tarique Rahman said the BNP would continue working in the country’s interest as long as it had the support of the people.

He also announced that the government would make education free for female students from primary to undergraduate level, following the initiative introduced by former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who had made education free for girls from Class I to Class XI.

In addition, merit-based scholarships will be introduced for outstanding students, he said.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister took part in a tree plantation programme along the newly excavated Sarikal Canal in Batajor Union of Gournadi upazila.
