The government will continue all relief and support activities until flood victims are fully rehabilitated, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Friday.
Speaking to reporters after distributing relief among flood-affected people in Patenga of Chattogram city, the minister said more than 700,000 people across the district remain stranded by floodwaters.
“So far, 75,000 families have received rice, lentils and dry food, while 40,000 families have been provided with cooked meals. These relief efforts will continue,” he said.
The minister said the government would begin rehabilitation work once the immediate relief phase ends.
“Rehabilitation measures, including the distribution of seeds, fertilisers and other essential agricultural inputs, will start next. We are also fully prepared to provide healthcare services, as waterborne and other diseases often emerge after floods. Necessary medicines have already been stocked,” he said.
He added that government support would continue until the rehabilitation process is completed.
Earlier in the day, Amir Khasru distributed relief materials among flood victims in Maijh Para Mahmoodun Nabi Chowdhury School, Hadi Para and Khejur Toli areas of Patenga.
Chattogram City Mayor Shahadat Hossain, lawmakers Abu Sufian and Ershad Ullah, and Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah were present during the programme.
The finance minister later left for Dohazari in Chandanaish, Nolua in Satkania, Adhunagar in Lohagara, and Saral Union in Banshkhali to distribute relief among more flood-affected families.
