Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday ordered swift and effective measures to curb air pollution, placing special emphasis on phasing out conventional brick kilns and promoting environmentally friendly alternative brick-making technologies.
The directives came at a meeting on environmental pollution chaired by the Prime Minister at his office in Tejgaon, according to Assistant Press Secretary Gazi Shahriar Pamy.
The meeting held extensive discussions on measures to tackle air and noise pollution, with priority given to reducing emissions from brick kilns—one of the country’s major sources of air pollution.
The Prime Minister stressed the need to accelerate the adoption of eco-friendly brick production technologies as part of the government’s broader efforts to improve air quality.
To address noise pollution, the meeting also decided to strengthen enforcement against the excessive use of vehicle horns in Dhaka. Tarique Rahman instructed law enforcement agencies to strictly enforce existing regulations and ensure tougher action against violators.
The meeting further discussed the use of artificial intelligence (AI), similar to AI-powered traffic cameras, to monitor and curb unnecessary horn use in the capital.
The Prime Minister also directed the authorities to expedite the removal of unfit, expired and environmentally polluting buses, trucks and other vehicles from Dhaka’s roads.
In addition, he instructed the authorities to install automatic traffic signal systems at at least 50 more intersections across the capital as quickly as possible to improve traffic management and reduce congestion-related pollution.
