Water levels at three monitoring stations in three districts have risen above the danger level, while heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for parts of Chattogram and Barishal divisions over the next 24 to 48 hours, raising the risk of fresh flooding, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said on Wednesday.
According to the FFWC, the Kushiyara River is flowing above the danger mark at Fenchuganj in Sylhet and Markuli in Sunamganj, while the Someswari River has crossed the danger level at Kalamakanda in Netrokona.
The centre said water levels in the Surma-Kushiyara river system increased over the past 24 hours and are expected to rise further during the next day before remaining stable for the following two days.
Several points in the basin may exceed the danger level within the next 24 to 48 hours, potentially causing short-term flooding or worsening the existing flood situation in low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts.
Water levels in the Atrai River in Rajshahi division have also increased during the past day and are likely to rise further before beginning to recede over the following two days. The FFWC warned that parts of Naogaon district could experience short-term flooding if the river crosses the danger mark.
Although water levels in the Muhuri, Feni, Selonia, Halda, Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers in Chattogram division declined over the past 24 hours, they are expected to rise rapidly over the next two days due to forecast heavy rainfall. Rivers, including the Sangu and Matamuhuri, may approach warning levels, leading to temporary inundation of low-lying areas in Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram districts.
In northern Bangladesh, water levels in the Teesta and Dudhkumar rivers have fallen, while the Dharla River remains stable. However, the FFWC said river levels may reach warning levels in parts of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha and Kurigram, posing a risk of localized flooding.
The agency also said the flood situation in Netrokona is expected to improve within the next 24 to 48 hours as water levels in the Someswari River continue to decline.
Meanwhile, the Brahmaputra remained stable, while water levels in the Jamuna and Ganges-Padma rivers continued to rise. Over the next 24 to 72 hours, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system may flow near warning levels in parts of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura, Sirajganj and Tangail, increasing the risk of inundation in adjacent low-lying areas.
