The capital, Dhaka, and several other parts of the country are likely to experience thunderstorms and gusty winds today, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
In its weather forecast issued on Sunday, the BMD said that from 7:00am and over the following six hours, the sky over Dhaka and its surrounding areas may remain partly cloudy to temporarily cloudy, with chances of rain or thundershowers.
South or southeasterly winds are expected to blow over the capital at speeds of 10–15 km/h. Daytime temperatures may fall slightly.
At 6:00am, Dhaka recorded a temperature of 26.7 degrees Celsius, with relative humidity at 92 percent. The city received 2 millimetres of rainfall over the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, in a separate forecast for inland river ports valid from 5:00am to 1:00pm, the BMD said that Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, and Sylhet may experience temporary gusty or squally winds of 45–60 km/h from the south or southeast, accompanied by rain or thunderstorms.
River ports in these regions have been advised to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 1.
Earlier, in its nationwide forecast issued on Saturday night, the BMD said that by 6:00pm today, many places in the Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, and a few places in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Khulna divisions are likely to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds and lightning.
Moderately heavy to heavy rainfall is also likely in parts of the Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions.
The forecast further said that a mild heatwave is sweeping across the Rangpur Division, as well as the districts of Rajshahi, Pabna, Naogaon, Dhaka, Kishoreganj, Tangail, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Rangamati, Chandpur, Feni, Cox’s Bazar, and Chuadanga.
However, the heatwave may ease in some parts of the country.
The BMD also said that daytime temperatures may decrease slightly across the country, while nighttime temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
