Dhaka recorded 175 millimetres of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 6:00 pm on Sunday, the highest one-day rainfall in the capital since 2009, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque said the city received 175 mm of rain during the period. BMD records show the highest one-day rainfall was 333 mm in 2009, and no single day has recorded such heavy rainfall since then.

Continuous rain, which began shortly after midnight on Saturday, triggered widespread waterlogging across the capital. Major roads and residential streets in New Market, Nilkhet, Azimpur, Dhanmondi, Mirpur, Karwan Bazar, Hatirpool, Kathalbagan and Green Road were inundated, with water levels ranging from knee-deep to waist-deep in many areas.

Floodwater also entered numerous homes, causing severe hardship for residents. Traffic movement was badly disrupted, leaving office workers, students and commuters stranded and bringing normal city life to a near standstill.

Meanwhile, the BMD warned that temporary gusty winds of up to 60 kilometres per hour, accompanied by rain or thundershowers, could sweep across 20 districts by 1:00 am.

The districts under the weather alert are Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Faridpur, Madaripur, Kushtia, Jashore, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet.
