The United States has deployed more than 20 warships to the Middle East as tensions over the Strait of Hormuz intensify, with the forces supporting a naval blockade against Iran, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
CENTCOM said that, as of August 9, US forces had redirected 55 commercial vessels, disabled two and boarded two others to enforce the blockade.
The deployment comes amid a standoff between Washington and Tehran over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy shipments.
More than 20 US warships, including two carrier strike groups, are operating in the wider Middle East region.
The heightened US military presence has further raised concerns about a possible escalation between the two countries, even as diplomatic efforts continue to find a way to ease tensions and restore normal shipping through the waterway.
