US President Donald Trump has described Iran as a “failed nation” and “dead,” while warning that Washington could deliver a “hard” response following renewed military clashes between the two countries.
In a social media post, Trump claimed that Iran had lost much of its military capability, saying the country had “no Navy” or “Air Force” and that its leadership was in disarray.
He also alleged that Iran was facing severe economic problems and high inflation.
Trump separately told reporters that the United States would “hit Iran hard” following Iranian missile strikes on US military positions in Jordan and the UAE. “There will be a response,” he said.
The latest escalation followed US strikes on Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
Washington said the targets were preparing to deploy rockets and naval mines in the strategic waterway. Iran retaliated with missile attacks on US-linked military facilities in the region.
The renewed fighting has raised fears of a wider regional escalation and further disruption to oil supplies.
Brent crude prices rose above $91 a barrel on Tuesday amid concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
