Pakistan has dismissed India’s claims and new position regarding Jammu and Kashmir as completely baseless, saying New Delhi’s assertions are the exact opposite of established international reality. The report was published by Geo TV.
The issue arose following a statement by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, in which New Delhi sought to have the regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh depicted according to India’s official maps.
Responding to India’s demand, Pakistan’s Foreign Office issued a strong statement on Monday (September 7).
Foreign Office spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan said India cannot alter the legal status of Kashmir through forcible occupation or unilateral decisions.
According to Pakistan, the official maps published by the United Nations reflect the actual legal position of Kashmir. Islamabad maintains that India’s unilateral claims or maps have no validity in the disputed region.
Sajjad Haider Khan further said that the Kashmir dispute is one of the oldest unresolved issues on the United Nations agenda.
He said the issue should ultimately be resolved through a UN-supervised impartial plebiscite, allowing the people of Kashmir to determine their own future. He also called on the international community to take immediate steps to stop human rights violations in Kashmir.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has also recently seen renewed discussion over the representation of territories on world maps. On September 4, the UN General Assembly reportedly adopted a new world map called “Equal Earth,” which depicts Africa as somewhat larger and North America and Europe as relatively smaller.
Although 164 countries voted in favour of the map, the United States opposed it.
Amid the global debate over the new map, Pakistan has once again raised its objections over the Kashmir issue and reiterated its position on the disputed territory.
