At least 11 people were killed and around 30 others injured in a suicide bomb attack targeting a police checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan, according to local authorities.

The attack occurred at a roadside police checkpoint in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the checkpoint.

Provincial emergency services said most of the casualties were security personnel and civilians. The area, which lies near the Afghan border, has witnessed a recent surge in militant violence.

The banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack.

The TTP and separatist groups in Balochistan have been blamed for much of the recent rise in militant attacks in Pakistan. Islamabad has repeatedly accused militants of using Afghan territory to carry out attacks inside Pakistan, allegations Kabul has denied.

Earlier clashes along the border reportedly killed several Afghan Taliban members, further escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
