Yemen conflicts render over 200,000 homeless

More than 200,000 people have been forced from their homes in Yemen as fighting between Houthi forces and government troops intensifies, according to local authorities.

The displacement crisis has worsened amid renewed clashes, particularly in the southwestern provinces of Taiz and Lahj.

Government data showed that 197,906 people from nearly 29,520 families had been displaced since the latest escalation began in July.

The fighting has intensified in recent weeks after the Houthis launched a renewed offensive and captured strategic areas along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.

The violence has forced civilians to flee to safer areas, while aid agencies struggle to provide food, water and shelter.

The International Organization for Migration said nearly 153,000 people had been displaced by the west-coast escalation by September 29, with Taiz hosting the largest number of displaced people.

The renewed conflict has also deepened Yemen’s already severe humanitarian crisis, with food insecurity and shortages of essential supplies affecting millions.

The World Food Programme has warned that continued fighting could further disrupt food supplies and increase hunger.
