Qatari delegation arrives in Tehran to avert US-Iran conflict

A Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran on Friday to hold talks with Iranian officials as part of renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent a fresh military confrontation between the United States and Iran.

The delegation, led by a senior adviser to Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, is expected to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments, Iranian state news agency IRNA reported.

The visit comes amid growing concerns over a possible resumption of hostilities between Washington and Tehran. Qatar is coordinating its mediation efforts with the United States to revive stalled negotiations and prevent further escalation.

Qatar reportedly presented Iran with a draft peace proposal on Sunday.

However, a senior Iranian official rejected the proposal as unacceptable.

The main disagreement centres on the sequence of negotiations. Washington wants Iran’s nuclear programme addressed from the outset, while Tehran insists that the US must first lift its blockade on Iranian ports and sanctions on Iranian oil exports.

The latest diplomatic initiative follows the collapse of previous negotiations over maritime security and freedom of navigation in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said Tehran remains in contact with mediators to explore proposals for ending the conflict.
