A police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in Habiganj has been withdrawn and attached to the police lines after a controversial video surfaced on social media in which he appeared to justify taking bribes openly.

ASI Mohammad Ilias Hossain, posted at Chunarughat Police Station, was withdrawn on Monday night shortly after several media outlets reported on the video.

According to sources, Ilias had gone to Ranigaon Bazar about a week ago to investigate a case filed by a local businessman, Noman Mia. In the presence of local people, he was heard making remarks about accepting bribes.

In the video, the ASI is heard saying that he had spent money earned through bribes to buy his police uniform and had joined the force to take bribes.

A local resident recorded his remarks on a mobile phone. The video later spread on social media, triggering widespread criticism.

Chunarughat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam said Ilias was withdrawn and attached to Habiganj Police Lines on Monday night.

“We have informed senior officials about the matter. Appropriate action will be taken against him following an investigation,” he said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Madhabpur Circle) Md Mafiur Rahman said he was aware of the incident and that an investigation was underway.

“I will provide details after the investigation is completed,” he said.
