A man posing as a member of the Bangladesh Police was arrested by traffic police after being caught riding a motorcycle against the flow of traffic in Old Dhaka on Wednesday.
The incident took place on French Road near the Noyabazar crossing, where on-duty traffic personnel stopped the rider for travelling in the wrong direction.
According to police, Traffic Sergeant Kutub Uddin was monitoring vehicular movement at the Noyabazar intersection when he noticed a motorcycle approaching against the designated traffic flow. He signalled the rider to stop for questioning.
During the initial inquiry, the motorcyclist identified himself as a member of the Bangladesh Police. However, when Sergeant Kutub Uddin asked him to produce his official identity card, he failed to provide any valid proof of his claim.
Police said the man was also unable to answer basic questions regarding his alleged police service, including details about his batch. He further failed to produce the motorcycle’s registration documents or any other valid legal papers when requested.
Suspecting that the individual was impersonating a police officer, Sergeant Kutub Uddin detained him and handed him over to Sub-Inspector Mohammad Shafiuddin of Bangshal Police Station for legal action.
The detained man was identified as Mohammad Zahidul Islam, also known as Zakir, 32, son of Jamir Hossain. He was living as a tenant at a house in front of Al Baraka Hospital on Road No. 1 of Keraniganj Model Town. His permanent address is Farazikandi Patowari Bari in North Matlab upazila of Chandpur district.
Police also seized the motorcycle, bearing registration number Dhaka Metro-L 35-4129, which was being used by the suspect at the time of his arrest.
Officials said necessary legal proceedings have been initiated, and further investigation is underway into the alleged impersonation and other possible offences.
