Police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have seized 55 Indian smuggled mobile phones from a poultry shed at a house in Bhurungamari upazila of Kurigram.
Police arrested a 26-year-old man, Md Enamul Haque Antor, in connection with the seizure.
Bhurungamari police confirmed the matter on Friday (August 21). The joint operation was conducted from 9pm to 11pm on Thursday (August 20) in the Asad Mor area of Tilai Union.
Police said they launched the operation based on specific intelligence about mobile phone smuggling in the area. During a search of Enamul Haque Antor’s house, officers found 55 used Indian mobile phones concealed inside a poultry shed.
The seized phones included various models of iPhone, Motorola, Oppo, Redmi, Realme and Vivo. Their estimated illegal seizure value is Tk 13 lakh.
A police team led by Assistant Superintendent of Police of Bhurungamari Circle Muntasir Mamun Mun, along with Sub-Inspectors Saiful Islam, Al-Amin and Asaduzzaman, took part in the operation. A BGB team led by Dhaldanga Camp Commander Subedar Md Matiur Rahman assisted the police.
Police said the Asad Mor area had long been used for trading smuggled Indian mobile phones. Mobile phone traders from different parts of Bangladesh, particularly Rangpur and Dhaka, reportedly visited the area to purchase the phones.
According to police, phones stolen or snatched across the border were brought into Bangladesh through a smuggling network and distributed to different areas. Many of the phones had no valid documents or registration and were traded illegally.
Muntasir Mamun Mun said the Asad Mor area had long been a hub for mobile phone smugglers and that the phones were seized in a planned operation based on intelligence with assistance from the BGB.
He said legal proceedings against Enamul Haque Antor were underway. The seized phones would be handed over to the relevant authorities after completion of legal procedures.
