RANGPUR: The bodies of a retired teacher of Rangpur Zilla School, his wife and their two children were recovered from a three-storey building in the Machuapara area of Rangpur city on Saturday night.

The deceased were identified as Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, their son Ayush Chakraborty, 14, and daughter Agami Chakraborty, 28.

Police and local residents discovered the bodies at around 8:30pm after a foul smell began emanating from the building in the Kamal Kachna-Machuapara area under Ward 24 of Rangpur City Corporation.

Ganapati and his family lived on the second floor of the building.

Inspector Abu Hasan Kabir of Rangpur CID confirmed the recovery of the four bodies, saying the circumstances suggested that they may have been murdered.

The entire building was sealed off as police and CID personnel began collecting evidence from the scene.

Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station AKM Nazmul Kader said the killings were believed to have taken place two or three days before the bodies were discovered.

After visiting the scene, Sumit Chowdhury, in-charge of the Rangpur CID team, told reporters that the initial evidence appeared to point to a possible robbery.

He said the electricity supply to the house had been disconnected and places where money was believed to have been kept had been broken open. The victims may have been strangled with ropes or gamchas, he added.

The condition of the bodies and the strong smell inside the building also indicated that the deaths had occurred several days earlier.

Investigators were examining whether the four were killed during a robbery or whether the robbery scene had been created to conceal another motive. Police have not yet confirmed the motive or identified any suspects.

CID and metropolitan police teams were continuing their investigation at the scene late into the night. Forensic evidence and other possible clues were being collected to establish the sequence of events.

The deaths have sent shockwaves through the local community, with relatives and neighbours gathering outside the building after news of the incident spread.

Authorities said the investigation was at an early stage and that further details would emerge after the forensic examination and post-mortem reports.
