Police have said that no traces of drugs were found in the drug tests of Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das, who were arrested in connection with the murder of four members of a family, including retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, in Machuapara of Rangpur city.
Deputy Commissioner of the Rangpur Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB), Sanatan Chakraborty, confirmed the information to Kalbela on Monday (August 31).
He said samples from the two accused were collected at the jail gate on Sunday for security reasons. Tests later found no presence of amphetamine or other drugs in their bodies.
A DB team visited Rangpur Central Jail at around 1:15pm on Sunday to collect the samples. A technologist and an assistant from the laboratory of Rangpur Medical College accompanied the team.
The DB had requested the principal of Rangpur Medical College to arrange for the samples to be collected inside the jail for the security of the accused. Following approval, the police team went to the jail with the medical college technologist.
On August 22, police recovered the bodies of retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife and their two children from their home in Machuapara.
Neighbours Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das were subsequently arrested in connection with the killings. They later gave confessional statements before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Ganapati Chakraborty’s elder brother, Gopinath Chakraborty, filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station in Rangpur against unidentified accused persons.
