The Special Response Battalion (SRB) has urged the public to provide information about looted and illegal firearms hidden in different parts of Bangladesh, promising rewards without legal complications for informants.
Wing Commander M Z M Intekhab Chowdhury, director of the SRB’s Legal and Media Wing, made the announcement at a media briefing at the force’s media centre in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka, on Friday.
He said the government and the SRB were conducting a special campaign to recover looted firearms. Police, the Army and the SRB have already recovered a large number of weapons through joint operations, but more public information was needed to accelerate the process.
The official said the SRB had preliminary information about illegal firearms in areas including Khulna, Rajshahi and Chattogram. However, insufficient information was making it difficult to locate and recover some of the weapons.
He said some people might have taken firearms from police stations during incidents without any criminal intention and could now be afraid to report them because of possible legal consequences.
Chowdhury urged anyone possessing such weapons or knowing where they were kept to inform law enforcement about their location. He said even basic information, such as the presence of pistols, rifles, magazines or ammunition at a particular place, would be sufficient for the authorities to recover them.
According to the SRB official, informants would be rewarded under government rules and would not face legal consequences for providing the information.
