DHAKA: Police have arrested 179 people following a flash procession allegedly organized by the banned Awami League (AL) and its affiliated organizations in the capital’s Gulshan area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner Niaz Mehedi said Saturday that the arrests began the day after the September 11 procession. He said those arrested were allegedly involved in the march and would face legal action.

Police said several hundred activists gathered in Gulshan after Friday prayers and staged the procession, chanting slogans against the government and the state.

According to police, some protesters later detonated cocktails in Gulshan and surrounding areas and threw cocktails at police as officers moved to disperse the crowd. Police responded by firing rubber bullets, after which the protesters dispersed. Five live cocktails were recovered from the scene, police said.

The incident triggered discussion and criticism over the law-and-order situation in the area.

On September 16, DMP headquarters withdrew Gulshan Division Deputy Commissioner M. Tanvir Ahmed and Gulshan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Daud Hossain from their posts and attached them to headquarters.
