DMP arrests 527 in 24-hr anti-crime drive

DHAKA: A total of 527 people were arrested in Dhaka in the past 24 hours during regular raids conducted by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Police also filed 55 cases during the period.

DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner Niaz Mehedi disclosed the information on Sunday (September 20) morning.

He said the arrests were made during raids across various police station areas in the capital, during which various pieces of evidence and narcotics were also recovered. Legal proceedings against those arrested are underway, he added.

According to Niaz Mehedi, the arrests were made by different DMP divisions as follows: Ramna 52, Lalbagh 43, Wari 57, Motijheel 63, Tejgaon 79, Mirpur 146, Gulshan 41, Uttara 45 and the Detective Branch one.

During the raids, police recovered one unexploded cocktail, 500 grams of gunpowder, 500 grams of jute fabric, 250 grams of petrol, 35 grams of nails from an exploded cocktail, seven pieces of tin, 10 pieces of adhesive tape, 104 nails and a tin fragment from an exploded cocktail.

Police also recovered 54.245 kg of cannabis, 4,115 yaba tablets, 21 grams of heroin and 50 bottles of cough syrup (Phensedyl).

Other recovered items included one private car, three knives, one machete, one small pair of scissors, one cutter, foil paper, gas lighters, one nylon rope, 14 mobile phones, two yaba-making machines, 2.6 kg of various chemicals, 454 grams of Benelia powder, 13 bottles of paint, 350 empty bottles and 1.5 kg of mixed ingredients used to make yaba.

Two victims were also rescued during the operations.
