The Home Ministry has decided to form committees at all educational institutions across Bangladesh to prevent drug abuse and gambling.
The decision was announced in a text message issued on Thursday and signed by Faisal Hasan, public relations officer of the Home Ministry.
Earlier, on September 16, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said gambling and drug abuse were among the major causes behind many crimes currently being committed in the country.
Speaking at an event marking the 43rd founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB), he said law enforcement should not focus only on taking action after crimes occur, but also identify and address their root causes.
“Crime is a symptom,” the minister said, stressing the need to analyse and research the reasons behind criminal activities in society.
He said drug addiction and gambling were found to be linked to many serious crimes.
According to the minister, controlling the spread of gambling and drugs could help reduce other crimes associated with them.
He also emphasised the need for broader measures to identify and tackle the underlying causes of crime rather than relying solely on post-crime action.
