A probe committee at Rajshahi University (RU) has recommended the temporary cancellation of the studentship of four individuals, including three leaders and activists of the university unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), over an attack on journalists.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Faridul Islam disclosed the recommendations to journalists at the university’s conference room on Friday morning (October 9).

He said a five-member probe committee was formed to identify those involved in the incident at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall on the night of October 4 and recommend action against the offenders. The university authorities received the committee’s written report around midnight on Thursday.

Based on an analysis of the evidence and the nature and severity of the alleged offences, the committee recommended temporarily suspending the studentship of Ahsan Habib, vice-president of RU Chhatra Dal; Bishal Chakraborty, an activist of the organisation; Hasibul Hasan, joint general secretary of RU Chhatra Dal; and Ariful Islam, general secretary of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall Students’ Union.

The committee also recommended further investigation into allegations against Rakibul Islam, assistant cultural affairs secretary of the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU); Takbir Ahmed Imon, vice-president of RU Chhatra Dal; Syed Sajharul Islam, joint general secretary of the university unit; and Chhatra Dal activist Tanim Rahman. Further action would be taken based on the findings, the vice-chancellor said.

The attack took place on Sunday night, October 4, in front of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall while several journalists were performing their professional duties. At least 10 people, including four journalists, were injured.

Following a meeting with journalists, the vice-chancellor had instructed the five-member committee to submit its report within 72 hours.
