DHAKA: Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has arrested Mohammad Nayan Hossain, convener of Adabor thana Chhatra Dal, over allegations of obstructing city corporation drainage improvement work, extorting money by holding building owners hostage and demanding protection money.
According to local sources, the city corporation recently began modernising the sewerage and drainage systems on several roads in the Adabor and Monsurabad residential areas. During the installation of new drainage connections to buildings under the project, several local youths allegedly obstructed the work and demanded Tk 10,000 to Tk 20,000 from each building owner.
A building owner, speaking on condition of anonymity, said some individuals had allegedly used their political identities to demand large sums of money in connection with routine city corporation work.
“They threatened to block the connections and halt the work if the money was not paid,” the owner said, adding that several office-bearers of Adabor thana Chhatra Dal were allegedly among those demanding money.
According to information provided in the report, Nayan Hossain has also been accused of directly participating in various political activities of the Bangladesh Chhatra League in the past. It has further been claimed that evidence and photographs showing his previous close ties with several fugitive senior Chhatra League leaders have surfaced publicly.
Meanwhile, local residents have alleged that a faction of Adabor thana Chhatra Dal leaders formed a local network to exert influence after the change of government. They said ordinary people were afraid to speak publicly about the alleged activities for fear of lawsuits and threats to their lives.
Residents have also accused members of the alleged network of regularly collecting extortion money from local shops and being involved in controlling the drug trade.
The allegations could not be independently verified.
