Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the authorities to prepare a comprehensive action plan to curb pollution in the rivers surrounding Dhaka, as part of a broader initiative to restore and protect the country’s waterways.

The directive came during a meeting on protecting the water quality and environment of the Buriganga River on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdus Salam said the prime minister stressed the need for an effective and practical roadmap to tackle the worsening pollution of the capital’s surrounding rivers.

He said the government will initially focus on the rivers around Dhaka before gradually extending similar pollution-control measures to rivers across the country.

The planned measures are expected to reduce water pollution, improve river ecosystems, and ensure the long-term protection of the environment through coordinated implementation by the relevant authorities.
