BRTC to launch special bus service for women in Dhaka

The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) is set to launch a special bus service exclusively for women in Dhaka to make public transport safer and more comfortable for female passengers.

The pink-coloured buses, branded as “Mahila Bus Service,” will be operated by female drivers and conductors.

The service is scheduled to be formally inaugurated on Tuesday, August 18, at 10am at the BRTC Dhaka Truck Depot in Tejgaon.

According to a BRTC press release issued on Sunday, the initiative is being introduced as part of the government’s election manifesto and aims to reduce the difficulties faced by women while travelling in the capital and ensure greater safety.

Initially, 10 buses will operate on different routes in Dhaka. Additional women-only buses are also planned for Chattogram and Bogura.

The service is expected to begin operating for passengers from Tuesday afternoon, with full-scale operations starting the following day.

Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam is scheduled to inaugurate the service.

BRTC Chairman Abdul Latif Molla will chair the inauguration ceremony.

The initiative is expected to provide women, particularly female commuters, with a safer and more convenient public transport option in the capital.
