Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged everyone to play a responsible role from their respective positions to leave pollution-free rivers and a clean, liveable environment for future generations.
He made the call at a review meeting on controlling pollution in the rivers surrounding Dhaka, waste removal and management, conservation, ensuring navigability, and developing the circular waterways. The meeting was held at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday (September 6) morning.
The meeting reviewed overall activities concerning pollution control and waste removal from the Buriganga, Turag, Dhaleshwari, Balu and Shitalakshya rivers and their adjoining canals and drains. It also discussed measures to ensure navigability and the natural flow of water in the rivers, as well as the development of the existing circular waterway around Dhaka.
The prime minister directed the authorities to take effective steps to implement the plans already adopted without delay. He also stressed the need for proper coordination among the relevant ministries, divisions and agencies to expedite the initiatives.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said efforts must be made not only for the present generation but also for future generations to leave behind pollution-free rivers and a liveable environment.
“We cannot simply wait for government directives. We must also act out of a sense of personal responsibility,” he said.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moin Khan, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, Industries and Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, and several state ministers and senior government officials attended the meeting.
Senior officials from the relevant ministries and divisions, administrators of Dhaka, Narayanganj and Gazipur city corporations, and Commander Dhaka Naval Area Rear Admiral Abdullah-Al-Maqsood were also present.
