Bangladesh is set to build its first ocean research vessel, marking a major step toward expanding the country’s marine research capacity and supporting the sustainable development of its blue economy.
The project has been approved by the government to enhance scientific research in the Bay of Bengal, improve marine resource management and strengthen oceanographic studies.
The research vessel will be used to conduct surveys of marine biodiversity, fisheries, seabed resources, water quality, climate change impacts and other ocean-related issues.
It is also expected to support disaster preparedness and environmental monitoring.
Officials say the vessel will enable Bangladeshi scientists to carry out advanced marine research within the country’s maritime boundary, reducing reliance on foreign research ships.
The initiative is expected to contribute to evidence-based policymaking on marine conservation, fisheries management and the sustainable use of ocean resources.
Bangladesh has increasingly focused on developing its blue economy following the settlement of maritime boundary disputes with neighbouring countries, creating new opportunities for marine exploration and research.
Once completed, the vessel is expected to play a key role in advancing scientific knowledge of the Bay of Bengal and supporting the country’s long-term maritime development goals.
