Bangladesh and the Maldives have discussed establishing a direct shipping link to boost bilateral trade and maritime connectivity as part of efforts to further strengthen their longstanding friendly relations.

The issue came up during a bilateral meeting between Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam in Malé on Sunday, according to a Foreign Ministry press release.

The two ministers explored ways to expand cooperation in migration and expatriate welfare, tourism, education, healthcare, the blue economy and maritime connectivity.

They also exchanged views on launching a direct shipping service, which is expected to facilitate trade and improve transport links between the two South Asian nations.

The meeting also reviewed the possibility of exchanging high-level visits to deepen bilateral engagement.

Dr Rahman reaffirmed Bangladesh’s “Bangladesh First” foreign policy and stressed the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties between the two friendly countries.

Maldives’ State Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Fahmy Hassan and Bangladesh High Commissioner to the Maldives Dr Md Nazmul Islam also attended the meeting.
