Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held separate meetings with Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Maldives Vice-President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef in New York on Tuesday on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The meetings were part of the prime minister’s bilateral engagements during his visit to New York for the UNGA, where he is scheduled to deliver his first address as Bangladesh’s prime minister on September 24.
Rahman’s meeting with the Bhutanese prime minister was among several bilateral and courtesy meetings scheduled for September 22.
His programme also includes meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, World Bank Group President Ajay Banga and other senior international leaders.
According to the published schedule, the prime minister is also holding discussions with senior UN officials and representatives of international organisations during his stay in New York.
The meetings with the leaders of Bhutan and the Maldives come as Bangladesh seeks to strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation with South Asian countries.
Tarique Rahman arrived in New York on September 21 to attend the 81st UN General Assembly.
He is scheduled to participate in a number of high-level meetings on the Rohingya crisis, climate change, sea-level rise and global inequality during his visit.
He is scheduled to leave New York for Dhaka on September 25.
