Bangladesh has sought India’s cooperation to ensure that fugitive former prime minister Sheikh Hasina or members of any banned organisation are not allowed to use Indian territory for political activities or actions aimed at destabilising Bangladesh.
The request was made during a courtesy meeting between Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir and newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon on Monday afternoon.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed various aspects of Bangladesh-India bilateral relations as well as issues of mutual interest. They expressed optimism about further strengthening the relationship on the basis of mutual respect, trust and shared interests.
According to officials, reports circulating on social media that Sheikh Hasina may deliver a public address virtually on August 5 also came up during the discussion.
Humayun Kabir told the Indian envoy that Bangladesh expects India’s cooperation to prevent Sheikh Hasina or members of any organisation banned in Bangladesh from using Indian territory to make political statements or engage in activities intended to create instability inside Bangladesh.
He said such activities could undermine the positive momentum in bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries.
In response, High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi assured the Bangladeshi side that India would look into the matter appropriately and remain attentive to the issue.
Both sides also underscored the importance of maintaining regular dialogue and constructive engagement, expressing confidence that mutual trust and continued discussions would help resolve outstanding issues and further strengthen bilateral ties in a sustainable manner.
