Funeral prayers for Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, were held in three stages today, according to Iran’s state-run Press TV.
The report said the prayers were held at the Grand Prayer Ground in Tehran on the third day of a week-long mourning programme.
Prominent cleric Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani led the funeral prayers, which were attended by a large number of mourners.
According to Press TV, the prayers were conducted in three stages. The first was offered for Ayatollah Khamenei. The second was held for members of his family—Sayyedeh Boshra Hosseini Khamenei, Mesbah al-Hoda Baqeri, and Zahra Haddad Adel. The third was offered for his granddaughter, Zahra Mohammadi Golpayegani.
The report added that farewell ceremonies began at Imam Khomeini Mosalla on Saturday, drawing large crowds of mourners.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said representatives from more than 70 countries attended the mourning ceremonies. In a post on X, he described the event as a historic gathering that would remain memorable in the history of Iran’s relations with other countries.
Press TV also reported that the week-long mourning programme, which began on July 3, has drawn millions of mourners as well as senior officials and dignitaries from across Asia, Africa and Europe. According to the report, the programme is scheduled to continue until July 9.
